Description

Two significant mid-19th-century surgical texts, published by the well-regarded Philadelphia firm Lea & Blanchard. Both volumes feature detailed wood engravings typical of medical illustration from this era. Despite some wear, foxing, and minor defects, both copies are structurally sound with solid bindings, making them valuable examples of historical medical literature.

Druitt, Robert. The Principles and Practice of Modern Surgery. Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard, 1849. First American Edition. 8vo, medium leather binding with light staining and moderate wear.
Light rubbing to the head of the spine with a small exposed crack at the top shoulder. Features 193 wood engravings. Light to moderate foxing throughout. Insect damage to the introductory pages and at the bottom fore-edge farther into the text block. Despite this, the text and illustrations remain unimpeded and fully legible. Binding is solid. Good.
Fergusson, William. A System of Practical Surgery. Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard, 1845. Second American Edition. 8vo, medium leather binding with light staining and wear.
Heavy rubbing to the head of the spine. Contains 252 wood engravings. Light foxing throughout, with some light staining and toning at the edges and bottom corners of the text block. Binding remains tight. Good.
